Staff Reporter

Truck driver killed in stone throwing

Thiruvananthapuram: Barring stray incidents of violence in pockets in Malabar, the PDP call for black day to protest against the demolition of Babri Masjid evoked little response in the State.

In Kasaragod, a truck driver was killed in the early hours on Tuesday when he was hit by a stone thrown by unidentified persons, allegedly supporters of the hartal.

In Kannur district, an autorickshaw was pelted with stones by persons protesting against the incident.

In Kunnamkulam in Thrissur, unidentified persons stuck a poster demanding the reconstruction of the demolished mosque on the board of a place of worship. The protest day was peaceful in Thiruvananthapuram. A senior official said that the police would continue to be on high alert in Sabarimala.

Special protection would be given to Tamil Nadu buses and police pickets have been posted on the various routes taken by pilgrims to Sabarimala.

The cleaner of the lorry, identified as Ameer (26) of Thrissur district, suffered injuries in the incident. He has been admitted to a private hospital here.

The police said that the undeclared hartal badly hit the vehicular movement in some parts of Kasaragod.

Private buses and KSRTC buses as well as private vehicles kept off the road.

A few KSRTC buses suffered damages when hartal supporters threw stones at it in areas such as Kalanad, Vidayath Nagar, Chowki and Chemanad here. The police said that the situation was normal in other parts of the district.
