Rathore retains double trap crown

HYDERABAD: With an Olympic silver medallist tag attached to him for life, he had to produce a world-class score to match. And Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore obliged the assembled crowd with a 191/200, just three short of World record holder Daniel Di Spigno's 194.

In the National shooting championship's double trap event at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) range, Rathore, who's world No. 2 now, fell a point behind his own National record of 192, posted in the Commonwealth Championships at Bisley in 2002. Happy with the score, the crack shot said the pressure to perform would always be there.

Fifth title on the trot

``Over the years, I am attuned to cutting myself off from the conditions, surroundings, negative thoughts and focus only on the positive,'' he said of his evolution in the Nationals, where he has clinched the crown five times in a row. Of the packed parking lot and a large gathering watching his exploits, he said the adulation of his fellow-countrymen was inspiring.

Harveen Srao claimed the junior women's and junior women's 10 metre air pistol gold. The first year B.A. student of Guru Gobind Singh College, who enjoyed the cushion of a five-point lead from the qualifiers, was under match pressure in the finals.

With a trembling hand, the bespectacled shooter peeped through the Iris, slipping to nine-odd scores, seven out of 10 times. Nonetheless, from bronze medallist last year, Harveen, clinched the gold, warding off Shweta Chaudhary's challenge by 2.4 points.
