BANGALORE : Bangalore University will conduct the South West Zone kabaddi championship for women from December 8 to 11 at the Ranga Mandira grounds in Rajaji Nagar here and it will be followed by the all-India inter-university championship from Dec. 11 to 13. About 60 university teams, including champion Mumbai and host Bangalore, are participating in the meet which to be held on a knock-out basis. The top four teams, from the SW Zone meet, will qualify for the all-India championship to be played on an eight-team super league format. Announcing the event, Dr. M.S. Thimmappa, Vice Chancellor of the Bangalore University, said that besides kabaddi, the varsity would also host the inter-university baseball championship in January 2006. He said that BU plans to evolve a comprehensive sports policy to improve the quality of sports and help the university sportspersons. Dr. Thimmappa said that during the 2005 season, the varsity team had fared well in several disciplines and qualified for all-India inter-university championships in badminton, swimming, hockey and volleyball.
