NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that a girl child, abducted by her relatives allegedly for grabbing property, be produced in court on January 6 next. It held four of the relatives guilty of contempt for disobeying the court order and imposed on them a fine of Rs. 2,000 each. A Bench of Justice Ruma Pal and Justice A.R. Lakshmanan gave the direction on a writ petition and a contempt application filed by the child's mother, Nirmaljeet Kaur, who sought a direction that Simran, abducted by the relatives, be produced in court. The petitioner was married to Surinder Singh Batra, based at Amritsar. Simran was born on February 16, 1992. According to her, the respondents, Gurcharan Singh Batra, Harbans Kaur, Amrinderjeet Singh, Ranjeeta Kaur and Amrinderjeet Singh Batra, all close relatives of the petitioner, forcibly took away the child after her husband died intestate leaving behind the petitioner and Simran as his legal heir. Simran was taken to the United States without her knowledge. The child suddenly `surfaced' after February 2000. On the directions of the apex court, a DNA test was conducted on the mother and child. It confirmed that the girl was not her biological child. In the light of this finding, the mother alleged that the respondents in furtherance of a conspiracy had caused her daughter to disappear without court permission.
