SHGs impress foreign groups

PONDICHERRY : Foreign delegates attached to Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), an international network of organisations comprising governments and NGOs, visited villages here to see the functioning of Self Help Groups and the use of information technology in the rural areas.

The delegates were in Pondicherry as part of a South-South exchange programme, GKP's initiative across nations to share knowledge in the field of capacity building and forge partnerships in Information Communication Technology enabled development programme.

Members representing foreign countries and NGOs from countries such as Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Guyana, Paraguay, Swaziland and Bangladesh visited Veerampattinam, Embalam and Kunichipattinam and interacted with volunteers of Information Village Research Project, formed by the MSSRF in these villages.

Rinalia Abdul Rahim, Executive Director of GKP, said, "the functioning of SHGs is commendable.

Many of the members learnt from the interaction that it has greatly contributed to their emancipation. Some of the members from African countries would also like to replicate the SHG programme in their country".
