Port: `don't involve private players'

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: The Secretary of the AIADMK A. Anbalagan MLA has urged the Union Territory Administration to cancel the authorisation of private contractor from an up country State to develop a port with an investment of Rs.1,400 crores. Addressing newsmen here on Tuesday he said that port was an essential and indispensable requirement of the economy of the State. Since cargo merchants preferred Pondicherry for their routine transactions and for import and export of goods, there was a need to have a sound port.

The government itself should construct the port instead of assigning the work to private players, he contended.
