Govt. urged to allow toddy tapping

Staff Reporter

KARUR: Taking into account the plight of thousands of people who were previously engaged in toddy tapping and karupatti (sweet palm cake) preparation for generations, the State Government should allow toddy tapping, the general secretary of the Nadar Mahajana Sangam, G. Karikolraj, has urged.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday after distributing flood relief material to over 50 families on behalf of the Sangam, Mr. Karikolraj observed that tappers were prepared to supply toddy to the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), which in turn could sell toddy in sachets and packets. That was because the Government has expressed apprehensions over possible mishaps or malpractices in unregulated toddy selling, he noted.

Allowing toddy tapping could also boost the price of the coconuts, as a significant area of coconut groves would come under toddy tapping, he pointed out.

When the State Government was itself selling liquor, then why should it hesitate to allow us sell toddy? he queried.

On December 16, the farmers' unions and toddy tappers' associations have planned to organise a joint meeting at Pallipalayam in Namakkal district to reiterate their demand to the State Government to allow toddy tapping, Mr. Karikolraj said.
