KOZHIKODE: A week-long Russian Film Festival was held in Kozhikode last week under the aegis of Aswini Film Society in association with the Russian Cultural Centre in Thiruvananthapuram and the Public Relations Department of the State Government. The festival evoked good response from film buffs in the city. The festival included four films by the master craftsman Andrei Tarkovsky. Ivan's Childhood, an adaptation of the war story by Vladimir Bogomolov, had won him the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival. It was considered as one of the greatest war movies. His other films screened at the festival were Mirror, The Sacrifice, Nostalgia. Mirror is a recreation of the human thought process. It is more autobiographical in nature. The Sacrifice is an allegory of self-sacrifice of an actor and writer who gives up everything to avert a nuclear disaster. Other films screened at the festival were The Cranes are Flying by Mikheil Kalatozishvili and Ballad of a Solider by Grigori Chukhrai. The former had won the Palme d'or (Golden Palm) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1957. It describes the irreparable damages wrought by war. The Ballad of a Soldier sketches an interesting tale of a 19-year-old warrior who has been granted a few days leave for his heroism in the battlefield.
