HASSAN: Kailas, general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party's State unit, said the party is contesting in 1,005 constituencies of 27 zilla panchayats and 3,683 constituencies of 176 taluk panchayats in the State. He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the party is confident of garnering power in 12 zilla panchayats, including Davanagere, Chikmagalur, Kodagu, Haveri and Mangalore. The party is also confident of capturing power in four taluk panchayats (Hassan, Belur, Arsikere and Sakelshpur). The leaders of the party's district unit are touring the four taluks extensively. B.B. Shivappa, who joined the BJP recently, has taken the responsibility of campaigning in the district and has started his tour. Taking the panchayat elections seriously, the State leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Assembly B.S. Yediyurappa, State president Jagadish Shettar, senior leader D.H. Shankara Murthy, and General Secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar will visit various parts of the State and campaign on behalf of the party candidates, Mr. Kailas said. Criticising the previous zilla panchayat body, national vice-president of Mahila Morcha Vimala Gowda said the party will highlight the failures of the previous body. She said the situation in Hassan district is akin to Bihar with the failure of law and order. Differences between the two cabinet colleagues has led to murders and torching of houses. The district administration has failed to contain the anti-social elements, she alleged.
`Inefficiency'
Holding Minister for Public Works and district in-charge H.D. Revanna responsible for bad roads and inadequate power supply in rural areas, Ms. Gowda said people are suffering because of his "inefficiency". She alleged that the Minister is misusing the funds allotted by the State Government for conducting Mahamastakabhisheka in Shravanabelagola in February 2006.
