BIJAPUR: Tension prevailed at Shirol village in Mudhol taluk after miscreants damaged an Ambedkar "dwajasthamba" there on Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, a few members associated with Dalit Sangarsh Samiti found the flag post damaged. The news did not take much time to spread. People belonging to the community gathered and demanded that the miscreants be arrested. They forced business establishments to down their shutters in the village. Later, a few Dalit youth went to Mudhol, 15 km from the village, and staged a protest there with the support of local DSS activists. Following this, shops and business establishments were closed for an hour. Police forces have been reinforced in the town as well as at Shirol. According to UNI, the bandh in Mudhol was total. Though the situation was tense, no violence has been reported thus far. Bagalkot Superintendent of Police B.A. Padmanayana is camping in Mudhol. DSS activists alleged that it was done intentionally to hurt their feelings. However, the police, who visited the village after the incident, are of the opinion that the flag-post erected in the middle of the road might have been damaged upon collision by a vehicle the previous night. The police are, however, not ruling out the hand of some political force behind the incident as all major parties have fielded candidates in the Shirol Zilla Panchayat segment.
