DINDIGUL: A sum of Rs.4.67 crores had been allocated for implementation of National Horticulture Movement programme in the district this year for development of horticulture, said Collector S. Murugaia. In a release here on Tuesday, he said District Movement Committees would implement the programme. The main aim of the programme was to invent new technologies to improve production and productivity of horticulture crops, creating awareness among farmers of horticulture crops, propagation of technologies that prevent post-harvest loss and introduction of latest food processing system. About Rs.39 lakhs would be spent for development of government horticulture farms in Kodaikanal, Reddiyarchatram and Thaandigudi and for showing field demonstration to farmers. Major-demonstration seedling farms in two places and small-demonstration seedling farms in four places would be set up at a cost of Rs.24 lakhs. The Department of Horticulture would create the infrastructure for production of certified seeds in two places and set up with mango trees in 600 hectares, Amla in 700 hectares and varieties of banana in 150 hectares. Flower cultivation could be developed in 205 hectares, chillies in 25 hectares and aromatic plants in 65 hectares. A special programme for rejuvenating dead mango trees would also be taken up in 100 hectares. To ensure irrigation sources for horticulture crops, 10 community tanks at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore would be established. Sizable funds have been allocated for tiny farmers to set up hi-tech green house using polythene papers in 4,000 sq. m., ordinary green poly house in 100 sq. m., land cover in four hectares, and for shade net and integrated pest management, organic farming and apiculture to boost pollination.
