"Thousands suffering due to lethargic attitude of bureaucracy and politicians"

DINDIGUL: Coordinated efforts of local bodies, non-governmental organisations and community participation with latest technological advancements were essential to eliminate bonded labour. Proper implementation of labour laws and constitution of monitoring committees were other suggestions for an integrated approach against bonded labour.

A proper understanding of bonded labour and cooperation from politicians and bureaucracy were some of the major challenges in eliminating bonded labours. This was highlighted at a workshop on role of trade unions in elimination of bonded labour held here on Tuesday.

In his keynote address, T. Karunakaran, Vice-Chancellor, Gandhigram Rural Institute, said good governance was essential to ensure comfort to all sections of people. Thousands of people have been suffering owing to a lethargic attitude of bureaucracy and politicians.

Unaware

For instance, many rescued bonded labourers in a village, Gundupatti, did not know the whereabouts of the land given to them by the government till date.

About 37 per cent of borrowers of IRDP loan did not know that the banks had issued loan in their names.

Top priority should be given to solve problems of workers in the unorganised sector. Impact of globalisation on unorganised sector should also be assessed, he said.

CITU district secretary, R.S. Rajendran in his presidential address, said the International Labour Organisation planned to conduct similar workshops in 10 districts to know sensitive issues in each district. It had already conducted workshops in seven districts and Dindigul was the eighth place. The two other workshops would be held at Tirunelveli and Madurai soon. Later, a State-level meeting would be convened at Chennai to chalk out an action plan for elimination of child labour, he said.
