KOZHIKODE: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Adoor Prakash on Tuesday promised effective steps to ensure that the benefits of the public distribution system (PDS) reached all those below the poverty line (BPL) group. The Minister promised speedy action to weed out from the list of PDS beneficiaries those who were not eligible for the benefit. The Minister was speaking at a meeting at the Kozhikode Civil Station held to review the performance of Civil Supplies Department in Wayanad and Kozhikode districts. Meetings of ration-dealers were being called in all taluks before December 20 to identify from the list of ration cardholders those who did not come under the Below Poverty Line category. Dealers' help was being sought since they were likely to know the financial status of cardholders in their locality. The Minister also instructed the officials to clear the backlog of files before December 31. Rationing inspectors were told by the Minister to ensure that only good quality ration-goods were sold. V.R. Padmanabhan, Director, Civil Supplies Department, M.K. Balakrishnan, Controller-Rationing, and taluk supply officers and inspectors were also present at the meeting.
