Kozhikode: Additional Chief Secretary Lida Jacob on Tuesday conducted the State-wide launch of opening Milma parlours in schools by inaugurating a parlour at the Feroke Government Ganapath Higher Secondary School here. A. Arun Kumar, Deputy Director at the Department of Education, inaugurated the first sale. Milma chairman P.T. Gopala Kurup presided over the inaugural function. P.P. Gopala Pillai, chairman of Malabar Regional Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd.; Managing Director P.V. George and school Principal P. Shantamma Mathew spoke at the function. Mr. George said the project to start parlours to market milk and its products was aimed at safeguarding the health of students. The State Government had given permission to go ahead with the venture, as it would encourage students to take milk and its various products. As many as 2,600 recognised Milma agents in Malabar region market 2.6 lakh litres of milk, 30,000 kg. of curd and 30,000 packets of buttermilk daily. They also sell 100 metric tonnes of ghee every month. Milma also markets various delicacies of ice-cream, sip-ups, peda and other products. It has a consumer base of 7.5 lakh in towns and villages of North Kerala. Mr. George said the Milma parlours would be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. He said permission had also been sought to open Milma parlours in colleges. The Malabar region of Milma stretches from Kasaragod district to Palakkad district. It collects milk from 780 societies and processes the milk in four dairy plants.
