Nellore: Taking advantage of the return to normal conditions in the rain-battered mandals of Gudur division, district Collector M. Ravichandra visited the handloom town of Venkatagiri on Tuesday and assured the people that the administration will provide succour to the affected there. Venkatagiri town was the worst affected, with a record rainfall of about 17.60 cm, on a single day, inundating several areas and interior colonies. A number of people had to be shifted to relief camps and provided with relief. However, for most of them, there was no means to earn livelihood and maintenance of family became difficult. Among those severely affected were the weavers, whose houses and weaving pits have been inundated, causing enormous loss. Apart from finished products, raw materials like yarn, colours and other accessories were washed out. The Collector visited all the submerged areas, including the weavers' colony and Nakkala colony and immediately ordered the supply of 20 kg rice and 5 litres of kerosene to each family. As a special gesture, he asked the local officials to extend the benefit to weavers also. Gudur Revenue Divisional Officer K. Subramanyam Reddy, Mandal Revenue Officer Swaminathan, Municipal Chairman A. Chandramohan and others accompanied the Collector. Special sanitary and garbage clearance exercise is also being undertaken in the town. Mr. Ravichandra later visited the rain-affected Dakkili mandal and interacted with the local people.
