AITUC opposes FDI in important sectors

Staff Reporter

KADAPA: AITUC was not against Foreign Direct Investment in principle, but believed that it should generate greater employment and food security, AITUC leaders asserted on Tuesday.

It was opposing FDI in vital sectors such as banking as it would affect agricultural lending and in petroleum, navigation and aviation sector as it could jeopardise employment avenues, AITUC district General Secretary B. Ramaiah, district President I. Adinarayana, Secretary W. Ramu and Town Secretary S.A. Sattar said at a press conference here.

The recent AITUC national conference at Delhi, which was attended by 11 delegates and two observers, resolved to demand social security for workers, implementation of Workmen's Compensation Act and minimum wages, they said. Lamenting that only eight per cent of the 30 crore workmen in the country had social security, they demanded coverage of the entire work force.

The AITUC leaders demanded continuation of existing pension scheme, enhancing ceiling on bonus from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 3,500 and extension of gratuity period from a fortnight to one month.
