TIRUMALA: `Black Day' marking the anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid passed off peacefully at Tirumala amid heavy deployment of armed police at all vulnerable places in and around the hill temple. Four battalions of Armed Reserve police and 120 policemen were drafted on security duty, as is the practice every year. Even otherwise the temple has been under a veil of security since the red-alert in the aftermath of the attacks on the Parliament building and places of worship in Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir. From the crack of dawn, the main entrance to the pilgrim-choked hill temple remained under the shadow of guns as armed personnel stood guard on all sides. The frisking of pilgrims and scanning of their hand and carry-bags were intensified both at the temple and at the foot of the hill -- Alipiri tollgate.
Armed pickets
Armed pickets were posted at all the reservoirs located on the hills while some patrolled the footpath and ghat roads to prevent any untoward incident. The security cover was extended to all the other TTD temples located in and around Tirupati to meet any exigency. KADAPA: Babri Masjid should be rebuilt and steps taken to ensure communal amity in the country, Muslims demanded in a `Black Day' rally here on Tuesday. The rallyists who carried placards assembled before the Collectorate on culmination of the rally organised by Al Manaar Minority Welfare Society.
`Curb BJP, VHP'
The political rise of BJP, Brajrang Dal and VHP should be checked as they were wedded to destroying the country's secular credentials and endanger national integrity, minority leaders alleged. Municipal Corporators Md. Inayathullah and Amjad Basha also took part. Nellore: Nellore district remained peaceful on Tuesday. The police however beefed up security. According to Additional SP D.V.S.S. Murthy no untoward incident has been reported in the district.
