MANGALORE: A polyclinic set up under the Ex-servicemen Contributory Health system (ECHS) in Mangalore is expected to become fully operational by March, 2006, Lieutenant General M.G. Girish, Director General, Discipline, Ceremonials and Welfare, Army Headquarters, Delhi, said here on Tuesday. Addressing ex-servicemen at the Deputy Commissioner's office he said the polyclinic was set up in January with basic equipment under the second phase of ECHS launched by the Government in March, 2003. "By March, 2006 the poly clinic in Mangalore will become fully functional with x-ray facilities, a laboratory, dentistry facilities, medical specialists, doctors and nurses. " He said the Army is in the process of establishing more educational institutions in the country. There are 117 schools and 12 professional colleges of the Army. The Prime Minister has announced scholarships for children of ex-servicemen studying in engineering and medical colleges. Besides, the Director General from his fund will give scholarships to children of ex-servicemen. To a query on the reduction in the liquor quota to ex-servicemen, he said the decision has been taken in the interest of their health. Deputy Commissioner H.V. Parshwanath; Lt. Gen. V.K. Dua (retired), Managing Director, Ex-servicemen's Contributory Health Scheme; Lt. Col. John Serrao (retired) and Capt. Shivaraman were present.
