CHENNAI: Children from Sikkim, the land of flowers, left their mark at the Raj Bhavan by simply being themselves.

Showcasing the simplicity of their community through song and dance, they also had a message for the tsunami victims.

The 24 Sikkimese children, clad in traditional costume, presented the Hindi song Jahan daal daal par sona ugle, much to the pleasure of all present. A Nepali song and a traditional harvest folk solo number by Radhika followed. The team ended the programme with a Deepavali festival song and a prayer for all those who were affected in last year's tsunami.

The audience, which consisted largely of Raj Bhavan employees, were moved by this display of solidarity and applauded loudly.

Children of Raj Bhavan employees and the schoolchildren from Sikkim exhibited their musical talents at a show put up especially for Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at the Raj Bhavan.

The children from Tamil Nadu presented four dances — all from Tamil films. NCC members presented the Padmini-Vyjayanthimala dance sequence from `Vanjikottai Valiban.' Some children enacted the `Ra Ra' song from Chandramukhi. Those below seven then danced to `Indiya naadu en veedu' from `Baratha Vilas.' A couple of five-year-olds presented a popular number from the film `Karakattakaran.'

Earlier, the Sikkim team gave Mr. Barnala and his family a traditional welcome with shawls. Menuka Bhutia, chairperson of the youth development Society of Sikkim and a Sikkim zilla panchayat member, presented a traditional memento to the Governor as a good luck charm. The programme was organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Gangtok and East Sikkim.
