CHENNAI: Muslim organisations held protest demonstrations in various parts of the State on Tuesday on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. The organisations demanded that the Union Government take steps to reconstruct the mosque at the same place. Those responsible for the incident should be punished according to law.
Day peaceful
The day passed off peacefully, a senior police officer said adding that adequate bandobust was made to ensure that there was no untoward incident. In the city, the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration near the Chennai Collectorate. The protest programme was conducted to also demand the expedition of the Babri Masjid dispute title suit pending before the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, and the immediate release of the report of the Liberhan Commission, which was enquiring the demolition. The organisation said the demolition of the structure "is a crime which cannot be forgotten and which should not recur." Similar demonstrations were held by the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath near the Chennai Collectorate, Islamia Jananayaka Party and the Tamil Maanila Muslim League near the Valluvar Kottam.
