Incident-free `Black day' in city

No bandh impact in Secunderabad, total in old city

  • Heavy police bandobust pays dividends

HYDERABAD: `Black day,' observed in protest against demolition of Babri masjid on December 6 at Ayodhya 13 years ago, passed off peacefully in the city on Tuesday amid tight security arrangements made by the police.

The bandh called by various parties and organisations condemning the demolition had no impact in Secunderabad but was near total in the old city.

    Bajrang Dal bid foiled

The police foiled the bid of some Bajrang Dal activists to celebrate Vijay Diwas at Paradise Circle describing the demolition as "victory for the majority community." Dispersed by the police, the activists went to Necklace road and paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao at his memorial.

The Mangalhat police took six dal activists into preventive custody at Indiranagar when they allegedly tried to take out a procession without permission. They were later let off on furnishing personal bonds.

The annual protest rally organised by the DJS was taken out from DBR Mills to Indira Park. There were fewer participants when compared to last year. DJS founder-president Shaik Mahboob Ali repeated his aggressive rhetoric about reconstruction of the masjid.

DJS activists came to DBR Mills from Saidabad in a convoy of vehicles raising slogans and the pitch of their sloganeering went up when the convoy reached the BJP office at MJ Market. Some BJP activists raised counter-slogans.

Ten additional companies of the Andhra Pradesh Special Police and four companies of the Rapid Action Force were requisitioned to thwart any attempt to disturb peace in the city.
