HYDERABAD: All the new autorickshaws hitting the road in the twin cities will be run on LPG, according to Transport Minister K. Laxminarayana.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr. Laxminarayana said the idea was to exhort the auto drivers to go for gas kit conversions.

But, the new autos would be run only on LPG cylinders, even though the Government had constraints.

Presently there were only 12 LPG stations in the city to cater to the needs of the autos plying on LPG.

    Special teams

Out of the 68,000 autos running on the city roads, only 15,000 had been converted.

"We have written to the Centre to sanction more LPG stations in the State," he added.

He said the intensive drive conducted jointly by officials of Legal Metrology, Transport and Police departments in the last 10 days has resulted in 2,434 cases being booked against the autorickshaw drivers plying with faulty meters.

The Transport Minister said that 10 special enforcement teams were constituted last month to conduct intensive checks. Each team comprising a legal metrology inspector, a motor vehicle inspector and an SI, conducted checks between November 29 and December 5.

In all 2,434 cases were booked and 125 three-wheelers seized. This is the first time such a joint inspection was organised and its success has emboldened the department to continue similar exercise once every quarter.

    Team for Delhi

A team of officials would visit New Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai to find out about the functioning of digital meters. He said that there was nothing wrong in fixing digital meters for autos when they were working effectively for maxi cabs.
