Closed circuit TV being fixed in Egmore station

The administration has intensified patrolling of track and vital installations

CHENNAI: Closed circuit television is being installed in Chennai Egmore, to strengthen security at the station. In all, 11 cameras are to be set up at strategic points of the station at a cost of Rs. 15.5 lakhs.

Chennai Railway Divisional Manager G. Narayanan, who reviewed the security measures at the station on Tuesday in connection with the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition, said two cameras were already functioning and three more would be switched on soon. The remaining six would be installed soon.

As a precautionary measure, the administration had intensified patrolling of track and vital installations. All empty coaches were thoroughly checked before they were brought to the station for their departure.

Parcel bookings were suspended for two days and articles were accepted for clock room facility subjected to through check up. Thanks to the steps taken by the administration, he said no untoward incident had been reported.

Token system

Talking to newsmen here, he said the DRM said the administration as an experimental measure install an automated token system at the passenger reservation centre in Chennai Egmore. The new system would dispense with queue system. Passengers on entering the PRS centre could get a token on pressing the system.

As soon as their turn came token number and the counter number would be flashed on a centralised electronic display system.

The new system had been successfully functioning at Thiruvanathapuram.

The new system, he said, would avoid passengers waiting in queue for a long time, besides reducing the stress on reservation clerks.
