Bangalore: Releasing the book, "Luminous Kashi to Vibrant Varanasi", here on Tuesday, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi described the holy city as one of perennial charm and with many facets. The book has been authored by K. Chandramouli , a mechanical engineer who is a prolific writer in Kannada and English. He has to his credit works on Bangalore, Mumbai and an earlier one on Kashi, besides others. The Governor said that Kashi or Varanasi is much more than a centre of religion. Besides Hinduism and Buddhism, a little known fact is that it has nurtured Jainism through the centuries. Its history dates back to dim antiquity and like Rome, it is an eternal city, he said.
Scholars, leaders
The Governor said besides its well-known personalities, the most prominent of whom in the last century was Pandit Madanmohan Malaviya who founded the Banaras Hindu University, the city has produced scholars, leaders and educationists. It was Kashi which was the cradle of Indology and also archaeology. He said it had in the past inspired scholars such as Prince Cunningham and now Mr. Chandramouli. Mr. Chaturvedi commended the author and said that he is a many sided person. He has displayed a deep understanding of the city. Sri Rangapriya Desika Mahaswamiji wanted Mr. Chandramouli to bring out translations of the book in Kannada, Hindi and also in Sanskrit. Kashi is the centre of Jnana, he said. Mr. Chandramouli said his first book on the city "Luminous Kashi" was published in 1995. The function had been organised by the Geleyara Koota of Chikmagalur and the Banaras Hindu University Alumni Association.
