KOCHI: The Kerala unit of the National Ex-Servicemen Co-ordination Committee is observing this Armed Forces Flag Day (December 7) as Anti-Terrorism Day. Ex-servicemen will take a pledge to keep a vigil against terrorism and extremism taking roots in Kerala. On December 11, at a ceremony at the War Memorial in Fort Kochi, ex-servicemen, along with Navy personnel from INS Dronacharaya, will take the pledge. The commanding officer of Dronacharya will attend the function. The committee is also launching a year-long campaign against terrorism and extremism. K.P. Saidalavi, general secretary of the Kerala unit, said seminars and symposiums featuring Hindu, Muslim and Christian leaders and priests would be held during the year to send across the anti-terrorism message. He told The Hindu that the committee was also planning to set up vigilante groups of ex-servicemen to report activities like arms training and piling up of bombs and other weapons. Mr. Saidalavi said his organisation, while empathising with the cause of the Pensionless Association, opposed the means it had employed to press its demand for pension (A dozen former employees of the paramilitary and armed forces were arrested on a train on Monday while on their way to Delhi with the alleged intention of immolating themselves in front of Parliament House).
