Seminar on ecological traditions today

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Conservation of sacred groves, trees, tanks and gardens should not be entrusted with the Central or the State Governments, as it would alienate those who are taking care of them, Nanditha Krishna, director, CPR Environmental Education Centre, has said. A seminar on `Ecological traditions of Kerala' to be conducted by the centre here on Wednesday is aimed at collecting information about Kerala's ecological heritage.

According to Dr. Krishna, by entrusting conservation with the Government, the present community conservation efforts would vanish as in the case of tribals who have been alienated from the forests.

The seminar will stress the need to preserve tradition. Proper education and strengthening of the local communities could help protect the remnants of biodiversity. The centre has submitted a national policy on sacred groves to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, which has been included in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, Dr. Krishna added.Noted filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan will inaugurate the seminar at Residency Tower in the morning.
