Nedumangad court grants bail

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have arrested three senior students of the Central Polytechnic, Vattiyoorkavu, in connection with the alleged ragging of Nithin Prasad, a first-year student, in his room at the polytechnic hostel on November 28.

According to Circle Inspector of Police (Peroorkada) V. Suresh Kumar, the arrested are Vasu Pradeep, 19, (civil engineering-II year), Abin, 19, (electrical engineering-II year) and Sarat, 18, (computer engineering-final year). The three, absconding after the incident came to light, were arrested at Pettah railway station around 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Vasu Pradeep, the first accused, was reportedly in Gujarat and the other two in Ernakulam.

They were charged under Section 4 of the Ragging Prohibition Act and Sections 323, 324 and 342 of the Indian Penal Code. According to the police, Prasad, a native of Nagaroor, Kilimanoor, was subjected to ragging by the seniors in the hostel. In his report to the police, the Principal had confirmed this.

According to the police, Prasad was subjected to ragging in Room 29 of the hostel. The incident took place when Vasu Pradeep was under suspension from the polytechnic in connection with the ragging of another student a month ago.

The three senior students allegedly showed him obscene pictures and photographs and asked him to mimic certain scenes. He was also allegedly made to smoke a packet of cigarettes and was beaten with a scale. The first accused also allegedly made Prasad, a hearing impaired youth, wash his clothes. The police have recovered the scale and photographs from the room in the hostel.

The three were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Nedumangad later in the day. Magistrate G. Anil Kumar has granted bail to all the three.
