NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia finally had good news for the student community on Tuesday as it announced that elections to the students' union would be held as scheduled on December 15. A decision on the request for a change in the eligibility criteria set by the University will, however, be taken at a meeting of the Academic Council later this week. The University had last week decided to defer the elections after a section of the student community protested against certain eligibility criteria. The decision to hold the election was taken by Jamia Vice-Chancellor, Mushirul Hasan, on Tuesday following a meeting with student representatives, including those who want to contest but are not eligible under the current set of criteria set by the University. The clause that had created a controversy made it mandatory for any student wanting to contest the elections to be on the rolls of a full time regular University course for a minimum period of one academic year. It also specified that student should not have failed to pass a complete part of a course he is currently admitted to, within the minimum period and conditions prescribed by the University. As per Tuesday's meeting, the last date for filing of nominations will be decided following a meeting of the Academic Council.
