This Day That Age
The Lok Sabha on December 6 passed the Citizenship Bill which provides for the acquisition of Indian citizenship by birth, registration and naturalisation and also for its termination under certain circumstances. All opposition amendments were rejected and a few official amendments alone were accepted. The House accepted an amendment which reduced the period for qualifying for registration for citizenship from one year to six months. This was done to accommodate the wishes of several members of the House, especially from West Bengal, who urged that unless this was done, lakhs of displaced persons coming from East Bengal would be deprived of the right to vote in the next general elections.
