Ponomariov, Grischuk advance

NEW DELHI: Former World champion Ruslan Ponomariov, Russia's Alexander Grischuk and Sergei Rublevsky advanced to the quarterfinal of the World Cup chess championship at Khanty Mansiysk in Russia on Wednesday.

The other five quarterfinalists will be known after the tiebreak games on Thursday.

The results:

Pre-quarterfinals: Game Two: Magnus Carlsen (Nor) drew with Evgeny Bareev (Rus) 1-1; Joel Lautier (Fra) drew with Etienne Bacrot (Fra) 1-1; Levon Aronian (Arm) drew with Francisco Pons Vallejo (Esp) 1-1; Gata Kamsky (US) drew with Alexander Grischuk (Rus) 0.5-1.5; Boris Gelfand (Isr) drew with Alexey Dreev (Rus) 1-1; Vladimir Malakhov (Rus) drew with Mikhail Gurevich (Bel) 1-1; Sergei Rublevsky (Rus) drew with Konstantin Sakaev (Rus) 1.5-0.5; Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) bt Loek van Wely (Ned) 2-0.
