Fruit trees in 5,900 acres damaged in rain: Collector

Six mandals in Kadapa district affected


  • Banana, mango, watermelon, papaya plantations damaged
  • Collector seeks immediate reports on compensation for damaged crops
  • Calls for grounding of dairy development units in Pulivendula soon

    KADAPA: Recent rainfall damaged horticultural plantations in 5,900 acres in six mandals of Rajampet and Kodur constituencies in Kadapa district, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Wednesday.

    The extent of crop damage, according to preliminary estimates included banana in 1,685 acres, mango in 896 acres, papaya in 1,965 acres, watermelon in 433 acres, chilli in 170 acres, turmeric in 165 acres, sampangi in 350 acres and vegetables in 50 acres, Assistant Director of Horticulture Madhusudan Reddy told the Collector in a review meeting on 20-point programme here. A realistic assessment could be done in two to three days as several fields were still waterlogged.

    Call to meet targets

    Mr. Kumar sought expeditious submission of reports on compensation required for horticultural crops and land acquisition in Pydipalem. Stating recovery of market cess was below par in Pulivendula, he directed marketing officials to ensure that targets were met by March. He sought grounding of all dairy development units in Pulivendula soon.

    Milk chilling centres at Proddatur would be revived on December 23 and the one in Rajampet on December 26, Mr. Asok Kumar stated. He urged DFO (Social Forestry) Rajasekhara Reddy to take steps to ensure that all the saplings planted survived. Directing steps to develop sericulture in the district, he said mulberry growth was achieved in 68 acres out of the targeted 100.

    Bio-diesel

    DWMA Project Director P. Easwara Reddy told the Collector that the target set for DWMA for raising bio-diesel plantations in 2,000 hectares and sprinkler irrigation target of 1,300 had been achieved. However, drip irrigation was implemented in 1,295 hectares out of a target of 4,000 acres. Chief Planning Officer Venkataramaiah, Joint Director of Agriculture Rajeswar, Rural Water Supply SE Umakantha Rao, District Manager of Housing D. Selvaraj, Kadapa Municipal Commissioner S. Aleem Basha and other officials took part.
