Bangalore: The State Government has assured all cooperation and support, including allocation of land, to set up a first-of-its-kind University for Aerospace Technology, proposed by the Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies and Industries (SIATI), in Bangalore. Delivering the inaugural address at the four-day international exhibition and seminar, "Aerodrome India 2005," here on Wednesday, Minister for Finance and Infrastructure Development P.G.R. Sindhia said that the proposed aero-engineering institute is a "unique one" and extended the State Government's support to set up the university. Mr. Sindhia urged the Union Government to upgrade the Mangalore airport into an international airport given its huge potential for handling international traffic. SIATI President and Chairman, Organising Committee, Aerodrome India 2005, C.G. Krishnadas Nair, said the country does not have an institution specifically to deal with aerospace technology-related subjects such as construction, maintenance, operation, air traffic control, ground handling and security and safety of airports. Whereas China has six such dedicated universities. SIATI has submitted a proposal to the State Government to set up such a university in Bangalore, and the response has been encouraging. "The State Government and the University Grants Commission have agreed to support the proposed university," Mr. Nair, a former Chairman of public sector Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., said.
