SINGAPORE: Presiding over a company that has come to be recognised in Singapore as a multinational winner from India, 35-year-old Vikas Goel gives himself the luxury of seeing the corporate success as "the story of the new millennium."

Is this hype or a realistic self-assessment? Mr. Goel, whose `eSys Technologies' is ranked first among the winners of this year's `Enterprise 50 Awards' in Singapore, is emphatic in his assessment. "eSys is probably the fastest-growing company in the world today. [The] numbers speak for themselves. We have grown to become a $2-billion multinational, with more than 100 offices in over 30 countries in less than five years."

Having won the highest honour for 2005 among privately held enterprises in the city-state, eSys, with its headquarters in Singapore, is now looking for wider horizons, convinced it is "moving in the right direction."

An Indian who came here in 1996 "pretty much empty-handed," Mr. Goel is now chairman and managing director of eSys, a technology-distribution firm that is driven by "an efficient process management model."

Mr. Goel, who holds a master's degree in business administration from Panjab University, launched eSys in 2000 as a distributor of hard-disk drives. Today it is stated to account for a quarter of the market share worldwide in the business of distributing the drives. eSys straddles the spectrum of technology distribution in the IT sector.

In the process of diversifying as a manufacturer of personal computers and as a provider of BPO services, the company is stated to have scaled up its operations and reinvented itself at a fast pace. For all this and for its future plans, "eSys has a strong back-office infrastructure and talent in India, the BPO hub of the world."

Mr. Goel says about the formula that has taken his company to a pinnacle: "There are two ways to business success: either you innovate or do things efficiently. We chose the latter."

Will the company, which has had a meteoric rise, stay the course? Mr. Goel's answer: "eSys is a company with strong fundamentals. We have brick-and-mortar business on ground. [The] worldwide web of eSys business offices and warehouses is a testimony to that. Physical business is supported by a robust, cost-effective business platform consisting of innovative IT infrastructure and efficient process management model. One of the strong reasons for our sustainability is efficiency. Our business platform is 500 per cent more efficient than [that of] our competitors."

Mr. Goel and eSys have won awards over the years. Notable among them is the Indian Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2004.
