The historical importance of Kottakunnu, a tabletop tourist destination in Malappuram town, is well known. But its literary tradition is arguably hazy. That was perhaps why a day-long literary festival held at Kottakunnu on Monday did not attract an audience that it was intended for. Malayalam 2005, held as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the formation of Kerala, had a fairly large audience in the morning and afternoon sessions. But they were mostly students. It looked like a literary function held in a school auditorium. Higher secondary students from a few schools in Malappuram were herded to Kottakunnu lend their ears to some of the leading novelists and poets of Malayalam, including C. Radhakrishnan, P. Valsala and Akkitham. However, there was quite a large but different crowd at a variety entertainment programme held in the evening.
