MUMBAI: Tata Motors Ltd. (TML) on Thursday launched in the domestic market a new range of Tata TL 4x4, India's first sports utility truck (SUT) that doubles as a pick-up and a sports utility vehicle. The product was introduced in the export markets six years ago. Addressing the media here, P. M. Telang, President (Light and Small Commercial Vehicles), TML, said, "The TL 4x4 has proven its mettle in South Africa, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and West Asia through extreme climes and arduous terrain. The launch of TL 4x4 is another milestone in our constant endeavour.'' The Tata TL 4x4 is equipped with a 1948 cc indirect injection turbo-charged inter-cooled diesel engine, generating a power output of 92 PS (about 92 hp). It will be available in BS2 and BS3 versions and its ex-showroom price will range according to the models from Rs. 5.80 lakh to Rs. 7.90 lakh. The vehicle will be produced from the TML's existing facilities. "We have a flexible set up and the TL 4x4 will share capacity with the Tata Sumo, the Safari and the 207DI,'' said Mr. Telang. The TL 4x4 is to be launched in a phased manner across the country. While the rollout in southern and western India will take place in December and January, in northern and eastern Indian markets, the rollout will be by the end of February 2006.
