LIGHTING THE LAMP: The former Prime Minister and President of the Janata Dal (S), H.D. Deve Gowda, launching the party's campaign for the panchayat elections at Sugur near Shimoga on Thursday.
SHIMOGA: "It is my ambition to see that my party should come to power in the State on its own," said the former Prime Minister and President of the Janata Dal (S), H.D. Deve Gowda. Launching his party campaign for the panchayat elections in the district at Sugur near here on Thursday, he asked the party workers to work sincerely to win the hearts of the people by hearing their problems.
Manifesto
He said sincere efforts in building the party should be considered sacred by the workers. The party workers should explain about the party manifesto to the rural people. "I have a desire to see the Janata Dal (S) coming to power, at least, in the state for one full term," he said.
Rural life
He said the party aimed at improving rural life by implementing programmes with emphasis on decentralisation of power. "That is why the Janata Dal (S) had been termed as a farmers' party and rural-friendly," he added.
Successful implementation
The party's State unit general secretary, Mahima Patel, said the programmes of the party such as banning online lotteries, providing rice through fair price shops at Rs. 3 a kg had been implemented successfully. The manifesto of the party, which was released on Wednesday in Bangalore, had considered the decentralisation of power as its prime motto, Mr. Mahima Patel said. The former MLA, H.M. Chandrashekarappa, and a senior leader of the party, P.R. Srinivas, were present. The villagers of Sugur accorded Mr. Deve Gowda a rousing welcome by bursting crackers and beating drums on his arrival. Villagers and the supporters of the Janata Dal (S) attended the public meeting. Earlier talking to presspersons, Mr. Deve Gowda said his tour was not an election campaign but was meant to bring about better coordination among the party workers. He said he would tour the districts till December 21 when campaigning for the second phase of the panchayat elections would come to an end.
