BJP trouble

The internal upheaval in the BJP is unfortunate. But it is now well established that the RSS-BJP ideology has some flaws. There is an inherently temperamental problem with its political culture.

The much talked about strength of `discipline and self-sacrifice' is unfolding itself as sheer rhetoric. Its outer covering of a `collective vision' or nationalist politics is now succumbing to regional politicking as Uma Bharti exhibited. Those who began their political life with the popular rhetoric of Ram Raj are now unable to visualise its direction. The BJP's political compulsions are now making it introspect — sometimes it is Mr. Advani pleading in favour of Jinnah, or it is the RSS saying the horses carrying the cart are too old.

Ms. Bharti has sent another, but quite unpleasant message that the young ones in the party are too rash, and too difficult to be given the responsibility.

Ironically, there are many similarities between the Natwar Singh and Uma Bharti episodes. Both are out, Mr. Singh from the Congress Working Committee and Ms. Bharti from the BJP. Both are isolated. While Mr. Singh believes the commission of inquiry will clear him, Ms. Bharti hopes Ram Naik will clear her. Both are victims of the party high command.

Chennai
