RAICHUR: Laxmi Venkatesh Desai College (LVD College) run by the Taranath Shikshana Samsthe, one of the oldest educational institutions in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. A two-day cultural programme will be held from Friday at the college as part of the jubilee celebrations. The college was the first college to be established in this educationally backward region in 1954 by the then Raichur Education Society. However, the society was renamed as the Taranath Shikshana Samsthe in 1961 after late Taranath, who was a towering intellectual, freedom fighter, educationalist, and social reformer. LVD College is one of the premier educational institutions, under the TSS headed by its chairman Parasmal Sukhani. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Sukhani said the TSS is committed to upgrade the standard of education and provide value added education in the backward region. From this academic year, the TSS has introduced scholarship for 100 poor students studying at LVD College. He said the TSS proposes to construct a women's hostel on the college premises at a cost of Rs. 45 lakhs with grant from the UGC. It has also planned to introduce post-graduation courses from the next academic year in micro-biology, bio-technology, computer applications, and panchayat raj and rural development at the college, Mr. Sukhani added.
