Raichur: A total of 143 candidates will be contesting for the 35 zilla panchayat seats in Raichur district, for which elections will be held on December 23. Of the 236 candidates who had filed nomination papers for the zilla panchayat elections, 93 withdrew from the contest. The Congress has fielded its candidates for all the 35 seats, while the Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party for 33 and 18 seats respectively. Forty-three nomination papers were filed for the six zilla panchayat seats in Raichur taluk. As many as 10 papers were withdrawn on Wednesday, the last day to do so. Nine candidates withdrew from the contest, of the 31 who submitted their nominations for six seats in Deodurga taluk. In Sindhanur taluk, of the 41 nominations that were submitted for the eight seats, 22 were withdrawn. In Manvi taluk, of the 70 candidates who filed their papers for the eight seats, 29 withdrew from the contest. In Lingsugur taluk, 23 of the 51 candidates who filed their nominations for seven seats withdrew their papers.
Taluk panchayats
The district election office is yet to finalise the number of candidates in the fray and the details of the withdrawal of nomination papers filed for the 130 taluk panchayats in the district.
