Rupee loses further ground
MUMBAI:
The rupee lost further ground against the U.S. currency on Thursday after a strong global dollar fuelled sustained demand from oil corporates.
Closing at 46.25/26 a dollar, another two paise decline from Wednesday's close of 46.2350/2400, the rupee had tumbled to a low of 46.33/35 on persistent dollar demand from oil corporates and importers. It, however, opened on a firm note at 46.20/21.
Relatively firm global oil prices at $59.41 a barrel weighed on the rupee value, dealers said. Exporter dollar sales, however, partly cushioned the rupee's fall. The rupee declined by five paise on Wednesday.
Widening current account trade deficit, a robust global dollar, slowdown in foreign institutional investment inflows amid worries over rising crude oil prices kept the rupee under pressure.
