CHENNAI:
Pursuant to the Prime Minister's decision, the Union Finance Ministry has released Rs.500 crore as immediate relief to the flood-affected Tamil Nadu, pending a detailed assessment of the damage caused by the heavy rain and floods.
The Ministry has released the amount even without waiting for a recommendation from the National Disaster Management Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, "on `on account' basis from the National Calamity Contingency Fund" , a Press Information Bureau release said.
The sanction order, dated November 29, was faxed to the Reserve Bank of India and the Finance Secretary, Tamil Nadu Government. The Pay and Accounts Officer, Ministry of Finance, was also instructed to ensure the release on the same day. The Finance Secretary was informed over telephone. He confirmed that the amount was credited to the State Government's account on the same day.
