Two arrested for duping depositor

Nagercoil: Sleuths of the Economic Offences Wing, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Palanivel, arrested on Thursday two persons on a charge of duping a depositor.

According to EOW sources, Raghavan (45) of Keelakalkurichi near Thuckalay was running a finance firm at Azhagiyamandapam and collected deposits by offering lucrative interest.

Vasantha Kumari of Keelkulam had deposited Rs.6.85 lakhs in the firm, and on maturity approached Raghavan for the moneyt. When he failed to repay, she lodged a complaint. Based on which Raghavan's wife, Celesta Prema (40), and Mary Ivan (35), partners of the finance company, were arrested.

The police are on the look out for Raghavan.

One killed in accident

Tuticorin: One person was killed and another injured when a lorry dashed against a motorbike at Ettayapuram on Wednesday night.

Police said Pandidurai (32), was killed on the spot after sustaining head injuries while the pillion rider, Rajapandi, was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital.

The lorry driver, Shankar (40) of Srirangam was arrested.

Dowry case against six

Tuticorin: The police have registered a case against six persons, who had allegedly tortured Mahalakshmi (35) seeking dowry recently.

Mahalakshmi lodged a complaint at the All-Women Police Station here on Tuesday that her husband Jeyachandran, along with five others, was exerting pressure on her to get Rs. 25,000 from her parents as dowry, ever since their marriage in 1995. The pressures became unbearable in the recent times, she had stated in the complaint.

Three get solatium from Minister

Tuticorin: Antiha R. Radhakrishnan, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, on Thursday distributed solatium of Rs. 50,000 each to the kin of Muniasamy, Thangapalam and Krishnammal, who were struck dead by lightning in the district recently.

He visited their houses situated at Vilathikulam and Ettayapuram areas and handed over the money along with a condolence letter from the Chief Minister. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: The grievances day for consumers under the Perundurai Division will be conducted on December 9 at 10.30 a.m. in the office of the Executive Engineer, TNEB, Perundurai. - Staff Reporter

Jewellery stolen

ERODE: Nine sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen from a house at Kolathupalayam in Kodumudi on Wednesday night. The police said that four men with masks entered the house of Muthusamy, a teacher and made away with the gold thali of his wife Maheswari. The Kodumudi police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Visit postponed

ERODE: The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Assurance Committee's visit to Erode has been postponed. The panel headed by MLA Santhanam was scheduled to visit Erode district on Thursday. The new date would be announced later, officials said. - Staff Reporter

Special camp

ERODE: On behalf of the Erode Revenue Department, Forest Resources and Service Centre, Thalawady, and Mysore Rural Development Agency (MYRADA) jointly conducted a special camp at Thalawady recently for patta name transfer through computers. Revenue Divisional Officer, Gobichettipalayam, Pichammal, received more than 300 applications. Gobichettipalayam Madar Sangam president Kalaivani and Sathyamangalam Tahsildar Balachandran also participated. - Staff Reporter

VAOs suspended

PERAMBALUR: The services of two Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) in the district have been suspendedfollowing complaints of discrepancies in the distribution of flood relief to the affected persons.

Official sources gave their names as P. Venugopal and S. Subramanian, VAO of Ladapuram and Keezha Puliyur respectively.

The services of another VAO, R. Gunasekaran at Thazhuthalaimedu village, who was on unauthorised absence, has also been placed under suspension.

P.K. Subramanian, VAO at Sriraman village, has been suspended for certain irregularities in the implementation of the Farmers' Insurance Scheme, sources said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.20 feet today.

The inflow was 12,565 cusecs and the outflow, 12,012 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Ex gratia for 7,500 EB contract workers

CHENNAI: As many as 7,500 contract workers, who have completed five years of service, will be paid ex gratia of Rs. 750 each by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced on Thursday.

In a statement, she said those who had completed five years service on April 1, 1997 or later and identified by the officials would benefit. It would cost the board Rs. 56.25 lakhs. The decision comes in the wake of a representation from the workers to the Chief Minister.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader J. Hemachandran and Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees general secretary S. Pancharatnam met the Chief Minister at Secretariat and urged her to regularise the services of all contract workers and make the ex gratia payment. — Special Correspondent

Flood relief advance sought

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association has appealed to the State Government to grant flood relief advance to its employees and teachers. It also demanded that the 60 per cent wage arrears, which had not been given so far, be immediately released in cash considering the damage caused by the floods. — Special Correspondent

Roads to be improved

CHENNAI: Major district roads, other district roads and those connecting sugarcane growing areas will be improved at a cost of Rs. 130.33 crore, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said on Thursday.

It would be funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. Apart from widening and strengthening the roads in districts, two bridges would be built in Villupuram and Kanyakumari districts. — Special Correspondent

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests

CHENNAI: The Government has appointed Sukh Dev as Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF). He was hitherto PCCF and Chief Wildlife Warden. The Government also promoted C.K. Sreedharan, hitherto Additional PCCF (Afforestation) and posted him as PCCF and Chief Wildlife Warden in the place of Dr. Sukh Dev.

The services of T. Sekar, Conservator of Forests (Headquarters), in the office of the PCCF, Chennai, have been placed at the disposal of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai, for appointment as its Member-Secretary on deputation basis. — Special Correspondent

"Contribute to relief fund"

CHENNAI: The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, the apex body of South Indian film industry, has appealed to all members of the film industry to send their contributions by demand draft/cheque drawn in favour of "Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund" to the Chief Minister's office.

In a release, SIFCC president K.C.N. Chandrashekar said the appeal was in the wake of the Chief Minister's plea in this regard. — Special Correspondent

Plea to register murder case rejected

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition seeking to register a murder case against Madurai Mayor C. Ramachandran in connection with the death of councillor R. Pandeeswari on October 25.

Justice M. Chockalingam dismissed the petition moved by P. Ramesh Muniyandi (35), husband of Pandeeswari. The judge observed that the police were seized of the matter and any further direction as sought by the petitioner would hamper investigation. — Staff Reporter
