South Central Railway mulls budget hotel at Tirupati station

Staff Reporter

Mathur inspects locations identified to set up the hotel

INSPECTION TIME: SCR General Manager D.N. Mathur during a surprise visit to Tirupati station on Thursday.

TIRUPATI: Given the huge inflow of passengers, mostly from middle and lower income groups into the temple city in the form of devotees, South Central Railway (SCR) officials are contemplating setting up a budget hotel on Tirupati East railway station premises.

Several thousands of devotees reach Tirupati by train everyday, as it is well connected to various destinations in the country, while the absence of an officially-run hotel has exposed them to unbridled fleecing by local hotels.

SCR General Manager D.N. Mathur, who arrived here on Thursday on a flash visit, went round the station premises and inspected the locations tentatively identified to establish the hotel.

He arrived here after inspecting the bridge work in progress near Bitragunta in Nellore district.

The damage wrought by the recent cyclone had thrown the schedule of many trains on the trunk route out of gear.

Location not decided

The places identified for the hotel are the first floor of the reservation complex, new booking office coming up on the southern side (near TTD choultries) or somewhere in the station building itself which, however, have not been finalised.

Mr. Mathur, accompanied by Divisional Railway Manager (Guntakal) P.K. Jain later went round the central reservation complex and had a brief interaction with passengers and staff manning the counter. He paid a visit to the rake parking yard.

Senior liaison officer Seshagiri Rao and area officer B. Jagadeeswara Reddy were present.
