`Clean Gulbarga' programme

Gulbarga: Students of Al-Qamur Nursing College participated in the "Clean Gulbarga" programme here on Thursday. Gulbarga Mahanagara Palike Planning Standing Committee Chairman Zahir Khan, who is also the secretary of Al-Qamur Educational and Charitable Trust, inaugurated the programme. Over 300 students participated in the programme near the Khwaja Bhande Nawaz Darga on the first day. In the next few days, students will cover different parts of the city with support from the Gulbarga Citizen Welfare and Development Committee. — Staff Correspondent

Two killed in road accident

Raichur: Sanna Ramappa and Yamunappa, pillion rider, were killed on the spot when the motorcycle they were riding fell into a ditch on the State Highway 23 near Sindhanur town on Wednesday. The Sindhanur Rural Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Dealer robbed at gunpoint

Bidar: A liquefied petroleum gas dealer was robbed of Rs. 1.7 lakh at gunpoint near his house in Bidar on Wednesday night. Police said two miscreants threatened Ananth Gramle Anadurkar with a revolver and asked him to part with the money while he was coming back from his LPG distribution centre. A case has been registered at the New Town Police Station. A high alert has been sounded in the stations across the district, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Woman commits suicide

Gulbarga: Parvathi Santoshkumar Melinmani, 24, resident of Hirapur in Gulbarga, committed suicide by hanging herself at her house on Thursday. Police said that according to Parvathi's brother Shivlingappa's complaint, Parvathi decided to end her life as she was being harassed by her husband and his friend.

A case has been registered at the Gulbarga (Rural) Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

`Conduct elections'

HASSAN: A group of Group `D' employees here on Thursday urged the office-bearers of the District `D' Group Employees' Union to conduct elections, which have been delayed forthwith.

In a press release here on Thursday, they said the office-bearers, who were supposed to conduct the election on May 10, 2004, have failed to do so. Even after 22 months, the office-bearers have not announced or fixed the election date, they said in the release. — Staff Correspondent

National meet on science and technology

Bangalore: The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology in association with the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and the Union Ministry of Science and Technology is organising a national meet of heads of science and technology departments and councils here on December 10. The meet will be held at the Indian Institute of Science. It will focus on the "Role of State science and technology councils" in the overall development of the country. — Special Correspondent

Three-day congress on lateral computing

Bangalore: The Department of Science and Engineering, PES Institute of Technology, is organising a three-day "World Congress on Lateral Computing" from December 16 to 18.

The event will have participants from India, Europe, the U.S., Australia and Japan. It will feature talks by leading experts, tutorials, special sessions, workshops, paper presentations and panel discussions. Financial aid for studies abroad

BANGALORE: The State Government has introduced a new scheme to provide financial assistance to backward class candidates pursuing higher education abroad. Applications have been invited from eligible candidates.

According to an official press release, candidates must have secured 60 per cent marks in the qualifying examination and not be more than 35 years of age. Application forms can be obtained from the office of the officials concerned in the districts or the Deputy Commissioner. The forms and required documents should be submitted by December 31, 2005. — Special Correspondent

State MLAs travel on Delhi metro

NEW DELHI: About 20 members of the Legislative Assembly visited the Delhi metro system on Thursday to get a firsthand feel of what things will be like when the Bangalore metro starts functioning.

The MLAs also had an interaction with the Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, E. Sreedharan, and travelled between Central Secretariat and Inderlok stations. — Staff Reporter

`No action ordered against official'

BANGALORE: The Chief Minister's secretariat has clarified that it has not issued any order to take action against M. Narayanappa, private secretary to Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan.

In statement here on Thursday, S. Manjunath, under-secretary to the Chief Minister, said the Legislative Council secretariat conducted an inquiry into allegations that Mr. Narayanappa had been harassing a woman employee. The probe revealed that allegations were baseless.

Some newspapers have published false reports stating that the Chief Minister's secretariat has ordered action against Mr. Narayanappa, the note said. — Special Correspondent

Appointed Youth Congress president

Belgaum: Basavaraj M. Shegavi has been appointed President of the Belgaum District Youth Congress. He replaces Sunil Hanmannavar, according to a release by State Youth Congress President Dinesh Gundurao. — Staff Correspondent

Re-admitted to Congress

BANGALORE: H.T. Venkatappa, former president, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes wing of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, was re-admitted to the Congress on Thursday.

In a press release, KPCC General Secretary H. Abdul Wahab said the order expelling Mr. Venkatappa from the party has been withdrawn following his assurance that he accepts the leadership of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and will abide by the party's policies and programmes. — Special Correspondent

Medical camp Hubli: Ayurveda Chikitsalaya, Hubli, will organise a medical camp on skin diseases on December 10. B.C. Samshimath will conduct the camp to be held at the chikitsalaya situated in the corporation building on Lamington Road, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Four arrested

KARWAR: Honnavar police arrested four members of a family on Wednesday in connection with the death of Nagaratna Timmappa Naik (26) of Hodke Shiroor village in Honnavar taluk on Tuesday. The body was found hanging in the nearby forest. Lakshmi Mahadev Naik, mother of Nagaratna, in her complaint lodged with the police, has said that Nagaratna's husband, Timmappa Naik, his mother, Honnamma Vasudev Naik, and two relatives, Lolakshi Eshwar Naik and Netra Manju Patgar, had tortured Nagaratna mentally and physically. — Correspondent

Sugar seized

KARWAR: Sadashivgad police seized 125 bags of unprocessed sugar from a compound belonging to Vitobha Sail at Majali village near here on Wednesday. The imported sugar, which arrived at Karwar port recently, was being stored in a godown at Arge near here. — Correspondent

Appeal to blood donors

HUBLI: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has requested volunteers willing to donate blood to the needy, to register their names at the new Bhagat Singh Blood Donors' Club. The objective of the club is to make blood available to the needy 24 hours a day. Ananthamurthy opposes power project

MANGALORE: Jnanpith award winner U.R. Ananthamurthy, in a letter to the president of the Nagarika Seva Trust K. Somanatha Nayak, has expressed anguish over the plans to set up a thermal power project at Padubidri.

Dr. Ananthamurthy said the project would create imbalances in the region. In the name of development and progress, people's livelihood was being sacrificed, he said. — Special Correspondent

Extra coach

BANGALORE: In order to clear the extra rush, one three-tier sleeper class coach will be added from Bangalore city to the following trains on Friday. The trains are the 6232 Mysore-Tanjore Express and the 6221 Mysore-Chennai Cauvery Express.

Tatkal berths are available in second sleeper class by the following trains leaving on Friday. Plea to Centre

Kolar: The State Government has urged the Union Government not to deduct Rs. 158 crores from the allocated funds to tackle the situation arising out of the recent rain, M.P. Prakash, Deputy Chief Minister, has said.

In an informal chat with presspersons here on Thursday on his way to Tirupati, the Deputy Chief Minister said that though the Union Government had allocated Rs. 472 crores, it had now decided to deduct Rs. 158 crores from the promised fund allocation and Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh had already taken up the matter with the Union Government, he said.— Correspondent
