Sahaj Grover prevails

Rakesh Rao

NEW DELHI: The setting was just right for some truly competitive chess for the champions of tomorrow. However, all the efforts from the organisers of the Asian youth chess championship fell well short of providing a smooth take-off for the children's event. The erroneous pairings continued to keep Chief Arbiter Hameed Majid occupied all day without much success.

In short, lack of professionalism in organising events of such magnitude refuses to go away from Indian chess.

Close shave

World under-10 champion Sahaj Grover, seeded eighth in the under-10 section, escaped an almost certain defeat at the hands of Krushna Mishra, who played white. Sahaj, down two pawns in the endgame, was starting at defeat before Mishra's inexperience came to the fore and let the Delhi-boy get away to victory. All other fancied names won with ease.
