BELLARY: It will be a multi-cornered contest in almost all the 36 constituencies of the Bellary Zilla Panchayat. Polling will be held on December 23. As many as 113 out of the 278 candidates withdrew their nominations, leaving 165 in the fray. The Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party have fielded their candidates in all the constituencies, while Janata Dal (S) is contesting in 35 constituencies. State unit of Samajwadi Party is contesting in 16, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has fielded its candidates in five constituencies. The All-India Progressive Janata Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party have fielded candidates in four constituencies. Twenty-four independents are also contesting in the elections. Following is the taluk-wise details of total number of candidates, figures within brackets indicate number of withdrawals: Bellary 35 (19) Congress 8, BJP 8, Janata Dal (S) 8, KPSP 7, AIPJD 2, CPI (M) 1, independents 1; Sandur 24 (20) Congress 5, Janata Dal (S) 5, BJP 5, BSP 1, SP 4, independents 4; Kudligi 28 (5) Congress 6, BJP 6, Janata Dal (S) 5, BSP 1, independents 10; Sirguppa 21 (20) Congress 5, BJP 5, Janata Dal (S) 5, AIPJD 1, CPI (M) 4, SP 1; Hospet 19 (24) Congress 4, BJP 4, Janata Dal (S) 4, BSP 2, AIPJD 1, independents 4; Hagari Bommanahalli 22 (15) Congress 4, BJP 4, Janata Dal (S) 4, independents 10; Hadagali 26 (10) Congress 4, BJP 4, Janata Dal (S) 4, SP 4.
