Crossroad sans signal sans constable!

Staff Reporter

A school correspondent has designed a unique system that helps end traffic jams Mallappa designs unique system that helps end traffic jams

  • It is slightly similar to the Turnpike system in vogue in North America
  • Further, it can be scaled down to fit in narrow areas, says Konda Mallappa
  • It allows motorists to choose any direction at any time while crossing the flyover

WAY TO GO: Mallappa explaining his system with a cardboard model.

Sangareddy: Correspondent of a small school and civil engineering diploma holder Konda Mallappa of Alladurg in Medak district has designed a one-level no-signal no-traffic constable crossroad, which he claims will end frequent traffic jams in the twin cities.

Mr. Mallappa made a cardboard model of his creation to explain the concept that is slightly similar to the Turnpike system in vogue in North America.

"My system is different because it can be scaled down to fit in narrow areas like RTC crossroads," he claims.

    Flexibility

The model allows a motorist to choose any direction at any time while crossing the flyover through the ramps unlike the rigid unidirectional flyovers in Hyderabad that invariably end up near a traffic signal.

At the same time, he has taken care that the flyovers are not multileveled like the ones in Mumbai and limited his design to single level.

Crossroads like Panjagutta, Ameerpet, Masabtank, Khairatabad, which have sufficient space, can convert the present system to the no-signal one as all the eight lines and one U-turn requires less than 100 feet space.

    Advantages

Describing the advantages, Mr. Mallappa says that unlike the signal system that requires policing, the non-stop method works round the clock, thereby reducing accidents. No signal means no wastage of fuel, time and money, he explains.

To allow smooth movement of traffic, a sub-way system linking all the four corners with sufficient space for public utility and greenery has been incorporated in his plan.

Mr. Mallappa hopes that the city planners will consider alternative models in the world before building flyovers.
