IFFK begins today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The curtain will go up on the 10th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) here on Friday evening. Dada Saheb Phalke award winner Adoor Gopalakrishnan will inaugurate the festival at a function at Nishagandhi auditorium. Minister for Cultural Affairs A.P. Anil Kumar will preside. Public Works Minister M.K. Muneer will be the chief guest. Actor Mohanlal will release the festival book. Mayor C. Jayan Babu will honour noted French filmmaker and jury chairman Bertrand Tavernier. Chalachitra Academy chairman T.K. Rajeev Kumar and artistic director Bina Paul will also attend the inaugural function.

The highlight of the inaugural session will be the dance drama `Monsoon of Kerala,' to be presented by a team of artistes led by Lakshmi Gopalaswamy. Jury members, including Mr. Tavernier, will attend the function.

A host of film personalities from Asian, African, Latin American and European countries will attend the festival. Deepa Mehta, Seema Biswas, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Jackie Shroff, Aparna Sen, Naseeruddin Shah, Suresh Chabria, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, T.V. Chandran, Sathyan Anthikkad, Kamal, and Jayaraj, and the directors of the films in the competition section will attend the festival and participate in the open forum, face-to-face programmes and seminars.

`Water,' directed by Deepa Mehta, is the inaugural film. Screening of the films in the competition section will be held at the Kinfra Film and Video Park at Kazakkuttom from Saturday.
