NEW DELHI: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday said that the Government was considering separate colours for domestic and commercial LPG cylinders to prevent the use of subsidised cooking gas for non-domestic purposes. He said this in reply to a suggestion made during a calling attention motion on the shortage of LPG and black marketing of kerosene in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. At present the colour of LPG cylinders for both domestic and commercial use was red, which made it difficult to detect the diversion of domestic ones for other uses, Mr. Aiyar told the House. The Minister said the colour of commercial cylinders could be changed to either black, blue, or green to increase the visibility. A recommendation to this effect has been sent to the Chief Controller of Explosives, he said. The suggestion to give separate colours to the two types of cylinders came from BJP member Kripal Parmar. When Mr. Aiyar said one of the main reasons for shortage of cooking gas was its diversion for commercial purposes because of the huge difference in the price of the subsidised and non-subsidised gas, Mr. Kripal said once the LPG cylinders were given different colours, their use at wrong places would be detected easily and immediately. He said currently, domestic LPG cylinders were being used freely in hotels, restaurants and for use as fuels in vehicles.
