BANGALORE: Actor and film-maker Kamal Hassan and Jnanpith awardee U.R. Ananthamurthy came on a common platform in the most unusual circumstances.

In the light of the ongoing debate on issues pertaining to Kannada, the Press Club had organised a meet-the-press programme with Dr. Ananthamurthy on its premises.

A preview of the film `Rama, Shyama and Bhama,' featuring Mr. Kamal Hassan was also scheduled there.

Change of venue

As the timings of the two events clashed, the club had to change the venue of the preview to a theatre at Malleswaram here. Participating at an interaction programme organised by the club recently, Mr. Kamal Hassan had promised that he would arrange an exclusive screening of his film to the press before its commercial release.

Following a request from the club, Dr. Ananthamurthy arrived to watch the movie along with his wife Esther Ananthamurthy.

Sharing dais

Later, he shared the dais with Mr. Kamal Hassan, director and actor Ramesh and film actresses Shruti and Daisy Bopanna and producer K. Manju.

`Kannada not alien'

Mr. Kamal Hassan said Kannada was not alien to him. But he was hesitant to speak the language in front of a person of the stature of Dr. Ananthamurthy. His very presence at the preview was an honour to him, Mr. Kamal Hassan said.

Thematic relevance

After the film crew spoke about the film in general, Dr. Ananthamurthy praised the thematic relevance of the film.

He also admired the characterisation of the stubborn doctor's role played by Mr. Kamal Hassan and Mr. Ramesh's ability as a director.
